What is an Echocardiogram?

An echocardiogram is a safe, non-invasive procedure in which ultrasound is used to produce pictures of the heart valves and heart muscle. The echo machine sends sound waves to a transducer (a microphone-like device) that is placed on your chest. The sound waves are reflected by the heart and back to the transducer which changes the sound into a picture on the display monitor.

During the examination you may also hear a "whooshing" sound timed with your heart beat as the technologist "listens" to the blood flow within your heart.

What information comes from an Echocardiogram?

An "echo" examination reveals information about heart chamber size, wall motion, valve function, blood flow within and around your heart valves. This test can be performed on all ages for various reasons.

What to expect?

You will be asked to remove your clothing from above the waist and wear a patient gown. A few sticky patches (electrodes) are place on your chest which will be attached to wires coming from the echo machine. You will then lie comfortably on an exam table or bed during the imaging process.

The technologist will then apply a small amount of gel on your chest and begin recording images from selective areas on your chest. You may be asked to occasionally change position or alter your breathing patterns momentarily.

The length of examination may vary slightly from person to person, but plan to allow one hour for your examination and any necessary paperwork.

Preparation

There is no special diet to follow prior to the examination. Continue to take any medications as you would normally.

Test Results

Echocardiograms are interpreted by a cardiologist (heart doctor) who has had special training in reading the images. The examination is usually interpreted within 24-48 hours following your test and a written report is sent to your doctor.
